Types of Codes in the Torah.

Jewish tradition recognizes four general types of interpretation.

  • P'shat; the plain simple meaning, (Simple, literal)

  • Remez; the allegorical metaphorical meaning, (Hint, Suggestion)

  • De-rash; the moral educational meaning, and  (Insight)

  • Sod; the mystical hidden meaning. (Mystery)

Lets look at these one at a time.

1) Peshat is the simple interpretation of the Torah. When the verse says (Genesis 1:1) that "In the beginning God created the Heaven and Earth," it means exactly what it seems to mean, in a very literal sense.

Within these four methods of understanding Torah, there exist countless possible avenues of understanding

Warning! I want to add something that I think is very important before we go on! Do not attempt to do deeper analysis of the Torah until you have first mastered the first level what we call Peshat. You need to know the plain, historical meaning of the text before you dig into and look for deeper meanings! (Walk before you try to run)

2) Remez is the different hints and allusions which are contained within the Torah. One of the methodologies the Torah employs to make these hints is gematria  the numerical value of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. For example, the gematria of "Bereshit bara" ("In the beginning He created)" is the same as "b'Rosh Hashanah nivra ha'olam" (on Rosh Hashanah the world was created)!"

Bereshit bara and b'Rosh Hashanah nivra are both 1116.

3) Drush (or Midrash) expounds upon the deeper meaning of the verse. The Hebrew word for "In the beginning" is bereshit. The midrash tells us that this word can be split into two words—b reshit. The Torah is telling us that the world was created for two ("b") "reshit"s ("firsts")—the Jews and the Torah. Although this is not the simple interpretation of the word, nevertheless it is a true and valid way of understanding the Torah.

4) Sod (secret) is the esoteric, mystical part of Torah. The Tikkunei Zohar (a book which gives seventy (!) different esoteric explanations for the word bereshit) explains that the word bereshit can also be split into "bara shis" (created [with] six). This is because the world was created through G‑d's six emotional powers: kindness, severity, beauty, victory, splendor and foundation.

Within these four methods of understanding Torah, there exist countless possible avenues of understanding. For example: There are many different ways to understand the Torah according to Peshat. That's why there are many Torah commentators who concentrate on Peshat -- Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Rashbam and many more – and they will very often (it seems, more often than not...) disagree on the literal meaning of a verse. In some teachings there are 600,000 ways to understand Peshat, 600,000 ways to understand Remez, 600,000 ways to understand Drush, and 600,000 ways to understand Sod!

Here are some other ways of encoding methods that are hidden within Biblical texts.

Surface text-

Another thing that has been found is that the surface text is many times connected to the code beneath it. Drosnin shared an example of this in Daniel 12:4 where “computer” is encoded beginning with the words “shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end.” It is clear that the information sealed up in the Bible code could not be revealed until the time of the end when computers became available. Confirming this fact, beginning in Deuteronomy 12:11, “Bible code” is encoded and in Deuteronomy 12:12, “sealed before God” is encoded.

 13 Attributes-

The oldest method passed on to Moses at Mt. Sinai, meaning 13 ancient methods of thousands of years duration, through which the Biblical text is analyzed in order to attain its deepest and most secret meaning.

Omitting/Skipping over Letters

When certain letters spaced a certain distance apart (intervals) from one another are combined, a new word is obtained that sheds light on a text's inner meaning.

 Interchanging Letters –

Switch the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet, "Alef" with the last letter, "Tav", the second letter "Bet" with the next-to-last letter "Shin" and so forth. Here again a new word is formed which is the 'horizon' of the original text.

 Numerology (Gematria) –

The numerical value of each letter and word teaches about their energies and the frequency of the same combination of letters and names provide an important analytical tool for Kabbalistic numerology.

Matrixes –

Crosswise letters in different geometric patterns and you can reveal very meaningful processes encoded in different writings and texts.

What are the 70 faces to the Torah?

Of the numerous stories told in the Torah, some familiar, and some not so familiar. What most of us do with these well known biblical stories is to make them fit into our theology. Whenever we read those old stories, we bring our own experiences to our understanding of the story. There is a tradition of these 70 faces of Torah (shiv’im panim la'Torah), meaning that its meaning may vary depending upon how we look at a story. Our psychological or intellectual perspective will affect what “face” the Torah presents to us at that time in our life. Another view of that concept is that in an average lifespan of 70 years, each year of our life we will see a different face to the Torah, which is why the same passage may be understood in a different light at different times.

Now it is up to you!

Every-time I read the Torah it's like a new book! There is something about the Torah, it is as if it is alive! It seams to change to fit what it is that you are going through in your life at the moment you are reading it.  It really is the word of God. I do not think that we have even begin to understand what and will be shown us in the Torah in the years to come. Study it, it's the word of God to us today!

"As Big as the universe is above us, so is the depth that you can go into the torah!"
